First published in 1914, this book was created to provide a comprehensive guide to the processes at the heart of ocean trade and shipping. Prior to publication, these processes had not been dealt with collectively, and descriptions of them could only be found scattered through disparate treatises. Originally aimed at naval and military officers, the focus of the text is explanatory, rather than technical, offering a practical grounding in a broad range of topics.
