異国の地で城の地下牢に囚われた女。名前も顔も知らないがこの世界のどこかに存在する絶対の敵。いつ終わるとも知れぬ長い裁判。頭の中の機械。精神病療養所のテラスで人形劇めいた場面を演じる人々—孤独な生の断片をつらねたこの短篇集には、傷つき病んだ精神の痛切な叫びがうずまいている。自身の入院体験にもとづく表題作はじめ、出口なしの閉塞感と絶対の孤独、謎と不条理に満ちた、作家アンナ・カヴァンの誕生を告げる最初の傑作。
