Summary: "Volume I of this two-volume set contains a thoroughly annotated translation of the Record of the Transmission of Illumination (Denkōroku) by Zen Master Keizan Jōkin (1264-1325), juxtaposed with the original Japanese text on which the English translation is based: Shūten Hensan Iinkai, ed., Taiso Keizan Zenji senjutsu Denkōroku (Tokyo: Sōtōshū Shūmuchō, 2005). The prefaces to the Japanese edition are also presented herein, together with English translations. The Introduction to this volume addresses such matters as the life of Keizan, the contents of the Denkōroku, the provenance of the work, and the textual history of its various recensions. The bibliography lists published and unpublished manuscript editions of the Denkōroku, modern Japanese and English translations of the Denkōroku, and many works of modern Japanese and English language scholarship that are relevant to the study of the text"-- Provided by publisher
