シルクロードの西の終着駅イスタンブルに、今もなお往時の美をとどめるトプカプ宮殿。１５世紀中葉から５世紀間にわたって、オスマン帝国のスルタンの居城であったこの宮殿の、構造や美術的特色を考察するとともに、謎に包まれた組織・制度の実態を、ハレムにおけるスルタン妃や側室の演じた政治的役割、女官や宦官の機能を軸に描き出す。去勢の方法や女性の衣裳、入浴の作法等にもおよぶ興味つきない宮廷の社会学・民俗学。
