本書があつかうのは、いままで未知あるいは未確認であった論考である。そのなかで、コペルニクスの唯一の直弟子、ゲオルク・ヨアキム・レティクスは、師の理論が聖書の権威に矛盾するのではないかという非難にたいして、それを擁護していた。これを出版することは重要と思われた。なぜなら、４００年以上たってはじめて、いまわれわれは、この問題にかんするコペルニクスとそのサークルの考えを正しく知ることができるからである。
