内容説明

Colloid science is the study of systems involving small particles of one substance suspended in another. The particles and the suspension medium can be solid, liquid or gaseous, but this book is mainly concerned with suspension in liquids. Such systems are the basic ingredients of paints, ceramics, cosmetics, agricultural sprays, detergents, soils, many food preparations, biological cells and many other systems of scientific and technological importance. The book lays down the fundamental physical and chemical concepts on which our understanding of such systems depends. The text is designed as the basis of a one-year course at graduate or senior undergraduate level in colloid science. Volume 1 is self-contained, and no prior knowledge, except standard degree-level physical chemistry, is assumed. Many exercises are used, and full development of necessary theory is given. There are frequent references to the many applications of colloid science, making this book particularly interesting for those with practical intention in research and industry, as well as current practitioners.

目次

  • Characterization of colloidal dispersions
  • Behaviour of colloidal dispersions
  • Particle size and shape
  • The theory of van der Waals forces
  • Thermodynamics of surfaces
  • Electrified interfaces: the electrical double layer
  • Double layer interactions and particle coagulation
  • Polymeric stabilization and flocculation
  • Transport properties of suspensions
  • Association colloids.

内容説明

The first volume of "Foundations of Colloid Science" was essentially complete in itself as an advanced textbook of colloid science, suitable for students and researchers in the fields of physical chemistry and chemical engineering. In Volume II the material has been extended to include some new areas and topics discussed in the first volume are developed in greater depth. An introductory chapter on the theory of liquids describes the concept of correlation functions and the use of Fourier transforms to analyze the scattering of light and neutrons by colloidal systems. Adsorption is given detailed coverage and a chapter on electrokinetics introduces a new approach to time dependent processes in the double layer. The principles of double layer theory are also used to review the behaviour of thin films and emulsions (both macro and micro). A final chapter on the rheology of colloidal suspensions calls on many of the concepts developed earlier to bring some cohesion to this important field. Advanced undergraduates and graduate students in colloids, materials science and engineering and researchers in colloid and surface chemistry, civil and chemical engineering and materials science should all find this text of interest.

Volume 2 contains material which has been extended to include some important new areas, and topics discussed in the first volume are developed to a much greater depth. A final chapter on the rheology of colloidal suspensions calls on many of the concepts discussed earlier to bring some cohesion to this rapidly developing field.
