Over the past 10 years, researchers have been investigating the expression, regulation, and protective nature of stress proteins (SPs) during and following exercise. Since the expression of SPs have been shown to provide protection to cells and tissues, the importance of understanding their role during exercise cannot be understated. However the terminology, the myriad of stress proteins, and their complex regulation creates a confusing arena in which to enter. Exercise and Stress Response: The Role of Stress Proteins provides an up-to-date review on topics related to exercise and health, giving investigators the necessary background to pursue stress proteins. ABOUT THE EDITORS: Marius Locke, Ph.D. is an Assistant Professor in the Faculty of Physical Education and Health at the University of Toronto in Ontario, Canada. Dr. Locke received a B.A. with honors in Physical Education (1984), a B.Sc. in Biology (1987), and a Ph.D. in Kinesiology from the University of Western Ontario (1992), where he also played varsity football. Dr. Locke was awarded a Natural Science and Engineering Research Council of Canada Post Doctoral Fellowship and studied at the Deborah Research Institute in Browns Mills, New Jersey from 1993-1996. In 1999, Dr. Locke received the American College of Sports Medicine's new investigator award. Dr. Locke is a member of American College of Sports Medicine, the Canadian Society for Exercise Physiology and the Cell Stress Society International. Earl G. Noble, Ph.D. is an Associate Professor in the School of Kinesiology at the University of Western Ontario in London, Ontario, Canada. He received his B.Sc. (1973) and M.Sc. (1975) in Kinesiology from the University of Waterloo and his Ph.D. from Washington State University (1980). Dr. Noble is a member of the Canadian Society for Exercise Physiology, the American College of Sports Medicine and the Cell Stress Society International and the Research Group on Biochemistry of Exercise of the International Council of Sport Science and Physical Education (UNESCO). The overriding theme of his research is to examine muscle plasticity and the manner in which muscle adapts to novel or stressful conditions, especially exercise.

内容説明

For decades, the CRC Handbook of Chemistry and Physics has provided scientific and engineering communities around the world with the broad range of current and critically evaluated data required by their constantly and rapidly evolving technical fields. Over the past ten years, revisions to the Handbook have kept up with semiconductors and high-temperature superconductors; addressed environmental concerns by providing data on pollutants, contaminants, global warming, and ground water contamination; and revised pertinent data to stay up-to-date with IUPAC standards. The Handbook's Editorial Advisory Board, comprised of world-renowned experts, plays a crucial role in ensuring that the Handbook adequately addresses the needs of their respective fields and that the data are absolutely up-to-date. One of the highlights of the 76th Edition of the Handbook is a completely revised table of Physical Constants of Inorganic Compounds. The 2,382 compounds in this table were selected on the basis of their laboratory, industrial, and environmental importance, as well as their value in illustrating trends in the variation of physical properties with position in the periodic table. An effort has been made to cover the most frequently encountered inorganic substances, including different crystalline modifications. Many compounds of current interest, such as buckminsterfullerenes, are included, as well as those compounds that have important technological applications because of their optical or electrical properties. Data have been carefully selected and verified by checking against the most reliable sources, and major references are listed. The arrangement of compounds in the Table by common name permits easy location of entries. Information for each compound includes synonyms, Chemical Abstracts Service (CAS) Registry Number, molecular weight, relevant physical properties (for example, crystal structure and color), solubility, and melting and boiling points. For each compound, cross-references to other tables in the Handbook in which that compound appears are provided. This cross-referencing provides the reader with other relevant information on the compound, including heats of formation, vaporization, and fusion; entropy; heat capacity; critical temperature and pressure; vapor pressure; and optical properties.

For the electronic version of the Handbook, go to the CRC Handbook of Chemistry and Physics, CD-ROM 2010 NEW AND UPDATED TABLES FOR THIS EDITION Section 6: Fluid Properties -- New tables on thermophysical properties of selected fluids at saturation and on the dependence of liquid density on temperature and pressure -- Major updates for tables on the density of water and properties of ice and D2O -- Major update and expansion of the table on critical constants of organic compounds Section 8: Analytical Chemistry -- Major updates for tables on the ionization constants of water and heavy water Section 9: Molecular Structure and Spectroscopy -- Updates for tables on atomic radii of the elements, bond dissociation energies, and spectroscopic constants of diatomic molecules Section 10: Atomic, Molecular Structure and Spectroscopy -- Major update for the table on atomic transition probabilities (added new elements) and updates for tables on electron affinities and atomic and molecular polarizabilities Section 12: Properties of Solids -- New table on electron stopping powers of elements Section 13: Polymer Properties -- New tables on abbreviations in polymer science and on physical properties of polymers The benchmark of scientific reference since the days of Einstein, Eddington, and Planck, no book is held to a higher standard than the Handbook of Chemistry and Physics. Perpetually vetted for misspellings, miscalculations, misperceptions, and misnomers, it is republished every year, so no mistake needs to be long abided, no enhancement long awaited. The job of editing the Handbook requires not only one who is relentless, driven to perpetually push the level of accuracy one more decimal point, but also one who is humble enough and smart enough to understand that the Handbook, like science itself, is a living, changing thing, and that it is both a record of achievement and a foundation for further improvement of that record. Until this year, the Handbook has been guided through 90 editions by just four editors. The last, David Lide, guided the book through 20 editions. Perhaps most importantly, Dr. Lide guided the Handbook into the electronic age, overseeing the creation and the continual improvement of interactive web and CD versions that have now become staples in every research library of note.
