Description and Table of Contents

Description

Since the publication of the two volumes devoted to `Injuries of the Brain and Skull' in the first series of the Handbook, much has changed in the field of neurotraumatology. In the development of knowledge, the emphasis has come to lie on the pathophysiology (as reflected in metabolic effects), the development of brain oedema and brain swelling and its effect on intracranial pressure. In this context, there has been much experimental research on animals, which justifies the inclusion of a separate chapter in this present volume. Other chapters cover such subjects as the medical management of head injury, acute infectious complications of head trauma, post-concussional syndrome, and brainstem death.
