A clinical reference to the physical, social and emotional needs and problems of adolescents. Contributors provide current data on definitions, etiology, epidemiology and pathophysiology, presenting symptoms, history, physical findings, laboratory evaluation and differential diagnosis. The book is organized into four primary sections: scientific basis of adolescent medicine; clinical approach to adolescents; medical conditions and psychological issues - to enable the reader to locate specific information quickly. The text explores the biological-behavioural interface necessary for an understanding of the emotional reactions of adolescents and emphasizes preventative medicine related to drugs, smoking and sexually-transmitted diseases. It also addresses psychological disorders including suicidal behaviours, school-related anxieties and obsessive-compulsive behaviours, as well as discussing familial and societal factors affecting adolescents, ranging from adoption to physical and mental abuse, and from cultural attitudes to homosexuality.
Management guidelines are provided for the range of physical disorders in which the patient's physical or emotional development are significant factors and the scientific basis of adolescent medicine is discussed.
