内容説明

The contributors to this volume cover the international range of scholarship in the field of Historical Linguistics, as well as some of its major themes. The work and ideas they discuss are relevant not only to other aspects of Historical Linguistics but also to more general developments in linguistic theory. Along with Professor Jones' Introduction, their comments provide a major overview of Historical Linguistics that will be the reference point for its development for many years to come and form an important contribution to general theories of linguistic behaviour.

内容説明

"Longman Linguistics Library" is a series aimed primarily at an undergraduate and postgraduate student readership. It aims to provide a broad view of the subject such as is difficult to obtain exclusively from scholarly journals and monographs. The study of language change has been a central concern of linguists. However, there have in recent years been substantial advances made in our understanding of the transmission mechanisms of temporal mutations to grammatical systems. This text addresses many of the most important issues currently under discussion by scholars of historical linguistics and brings together the views and conclusions of the world's most outstanding exponents in the field at an important juncture in the study of this major topic. This collection sets out the current state of the art in research in historical linguistics. It highlights new theoretical advances and examines new directions where general theories have proved to be less than promising. It is aimed at senior level undergraduate and postgraduates and is suitable for courses in English language, linguistics and historical linguistics.
