Description

Dementia is one of the most important clinical conditions in modern medicine. In the elderly, it is a common condition, numerically dwarfing other, better known, diseases. Advances in the last decade have been numerous both in the breadth of clinical assessment of patient, the use of adjuvant investigations and significantly in the basic biology of a number of disorders. This book attempts a comprehensive review of dementia in one volume. Attention is paid both to the clinical syndrome of demential and the specific disorders which underlie the condition. The book is divided into two main parts - Alzheimer's disease and other dementias. The first consists of chapters covering epidemiology, aetiology, clinical aspects, neuropathology, neurochemistry and molecular biology, neuroadiology, neurophysiology and treatment aspects. The second covers vascular dementia and includes chapters on dementias associated with psychiatric conditions (for example depression and paraphenia), neurological disorders (for example Parkinson's disease and Huntington's disease) as well as other diseases such as Pick's disease, frontal lobe dementia and progressive focal syndromes. The complications of alcoholism and AIDS are also included as is a chapter on dementias. The book is written by experts in the field and presents an up-to-date digest of the most important aspects of dementia. Clinicians should find information about basic science and scientists should find understandable accounts of the clinical syndromes. The book should appeal to those interested in the syndrome of dementia and its causes.
