本書では、２変数と３変数の場合を詳しく説明した。また、自習書として使えるよう証明はできるだけ詳しく書いた。いろいろな定理の背景を理解してもらうため歴史的な話を処々に入れた。また、多変数の話は当然のことながら１変数についての知識を必要とするため、キーワードとなるものについては、「１変数」編への参照箇所を明示しておいた。
