古来、日本人は肉食を忌み避けたとされている。だが、神話の神々は生贅を食べ、墓にも肉が供えられていた。信仰を中心に肉食の実態を解明し、のちに禁忌となる過程を考察。祭儀と肉の関係から、古代文化の実像に迫る。
