紀元前三世紀、エジプトのナイル河口に繁栄した国際都市アレクサンドリアに、世界中の英知を一ヶ所に集めんと建設された古代最大の図書館があった。蔵書数五十万冊ともいわれ、研究施設ムーゼイオンからは幾多の著名人を輩出したが、度重なる戦乱と異なる宗教間の争いにまきこまれ、全て灰燼に帰してしまった。本書はこの伝説的図書館の辿った歴史的運命を語るとともに、同時代の資料から在りし日の全容に迫ろうとするものである。
