芭蕉は多くの門人を集め、その数は３００人とも２０００人ともいわれれている。門人たちは江戸俳壇で大きな位置を占め、蕉門は華ひらいた。芭蕉の精神は彼らにどのように継承され発展したのだろうか。其角・嵐雪・杉風・去来・丈草・凡兆・許六・支考・野坡・惟然の１０人を、新「蕉門の十哲」として挙げ、その生涯や作風、複雑な人間模様をえがく。
